Iron Ore Mines Tensa has been declared the best mine by the Director General of Mines Safety, Govt. of India

JSPL’s iron ore mines, at Tensa valley; district Sundargarh, Orissa, 100 km from Rourkela, fulfill the company’s requirement of iron ore for producing sponge iron. Produced as part of JSPL’s backward integration plans to make the company self reliant, the iron ores from Tensa mines ensure consistency in the quality of raw material used in sponge iron kilns. Operational since 1990, these mines are popularly known as TRB (Tantra, Raikela, Bandhal) Mines.

Production Capacity

The mines at Tensa meet a part of the company’s iron ore requirement for the sponge iron plant. Equipped with fully mechanised techniques, it currently produces about 9,00,000 MT of sponge grade iron ore. An additional mobile screening unit has been installed to ensure the availability of high-grade iron ore / fines for its sinter plant at Raigarh (Chhattisgarh).

Mining

Mining is done by top slicing method. OB and Ore are removed mechanically with the help of excavator and dumper. Average heights of the benches are maintained as per the regulations and permissions granted by Director of Mines Safety, Chaibasa region. The ROM is fed to the crusher to get final product of 5 - 20 mm crushed ore.

Haul roads are maintained properly, taking into account width and gradient. Strong parapet walls all along the haul road have been provided & maintained.

Drilling operation is carried out at mines with the help of XAH-210 Atlas Copco compressor and wagon drills. Water injection system has been provided in wagon drill for wet drilling to suppress the fugitive dust. Rock breaker has been provided to break the oversize boulders and eliminating the secondary blasting.

Sufficient water spraying arrangements has been provided to suppress dust on haul road with the help of 2 Nos. 10 KL & 1 No. 12 KL capacity water tankers throughout the working shifts. Water sprinkling has also been provided at all discharge points of OPP (Ore Processing Plant) along with the atomized sprinkling arrangement.

35 MT capacity dumpers transport the ROM from mine to crusher through well-maintained haul road. The haul road is one of the best in the locality, for which we are getting the best haul road prize during the Annual Mines Safety Week Celebration every year.

Welfare Amenities

Set amidst picturesque view and greenery all-round, these mines also house JSPL’s valuable team of workers. They are provided accommodation facilities with essential and recreational facilities like dispensary, playground, children’s parks, clubs, sports facility, co-operative society, conveyance to attend duty, etc.

Vocational Training & Safety

Vocational training in the field is provided to all newcomers. Training schedule is drawn from time to time, which accommodates theoretical, refresher, audio-visual and practical training (on the job & feedback test). Job training is also provided to all the contractor workers on regular basis as well.

Regular safety meetings are conducted with equal participation from workers, management and contractor’s representative in order to ensure the zero accident aim.

Health, Peripheral Development & CSR activities

Free medical service is provided to nearby villagers regularly (i.e. Tantra, Raikela, Zero Point, Bandhal & Barsuan) through JSPL medical staffs. Medical heath camps are being organized in the mines & its peripheral area. As per peripherial development programme, JSPL has voluntarily constructed a 35 km road from Tensa to Kaleiposh for vehicular movement. A 17 km black topped road from the mines to Barsuan is maintained. Other development work done include construction of small dams, wells, ponds, temple, club and providing free electricity and water supply. JSPL has appointed teachers to various schools in the region as well. The company actively participates in cultural celebrations of local tribes.

We have constructed a 250-seater residential Tribal Girls’ High School at Baidapali of Bonai sub-division of Sundargarh district, Orissa. Besides providing teachers in the local schools, renovation of ponds, development of education standards and health camps are priority activities under our CSR scheme.

  • Top soil mined out separately and stacked for use in plantation.
  • Effective dust suppression system introduced at ore processing plant. Water tanker & sprinklers are provided for dust suppression.
  • Air, water quality, noise and other environmental parameters monitored regularly and maintained below permissible limits.
  • Green belts laid along the safety zone (7.5 meter along the M.L. Boundary)
  • Environment system is protected and monitored regularly.
