Coal is one of the most important resources for the steel and power industry. JSPL’s open cast coalmines form the backbone of all its existing and future business plans. These mines support the company’s philosophy of self-reliance and contribute significantly to achieve comprehensive back-end integration.
The open cast coalmines situated at Tamnar, 55 km from the Raigarh plant in Chhattisgarh, started in 1999 and today fully meets the coal requirement for captive consumption of the plant.
Spread over 705 hectares, the mine is well connected to JSPL's Raigarh plant by a metal road built exclusively for this purpose. The mining process uses the latest machinery and is supplemented by fully mechanised systems. The mine has wide haul roads with 6 m benches. The working faces and the haul roads are regularly sprinkled with water to keep them dust free. The production capacity of the mines is 6 million MTPA and the entire coal is used for steel making and power generation.
To improve the quality of ROM coal from these mines, a 6.0 million TPA coal washery has been commissioned, where 47-48% ash coal is washed down to 26% ash. This washery meets the requirements of coal for the sponge iron plant and in addition produces middling's for generation of captive power of about 300 MW.
The workforces at these mines are provided with facilities to generate a favourable work culture. The company provides housing, medical and other facilities to all employees. A modern colony, with facilities like school, hospital, parks and gardens is being planned here.
