Control of Water Pollution
JSPL
  • 100% effluent recycling to conserve water by a closed water cycle network wherein dust laden wastewater is treated in Effluent Treatment Plant comprising flocculation & clarification in Blast Furnace
  • Skimming of oil & collection of scales in Rail & Universal Beam Mill.
  • The wastewater generated in coal washery, in form of slurry (containing fines, coal particles etc) is taken into pond from where cascaded water is reused in washery.
  • Recycling of water from ash pond
  • Zero discharge of effluent is maintained
  • Treatment of domestic wastewater of colonies and offices in the sewage treatment plant and reutilization in plantation.
Control of Solid Waste
Besides air and water pollution management, a proper action plan has also been formulated for solid waste management. We have adopted 3 "R"s namely Reuse, Recycle and Reduce to convert waste into environmental wealth.

Our plant at Raigarh in the State of Chhattisgarh, has been integrated in such a way that most of the solid waste is re- utilized within the plant and rest is disposed off for use by other suitable industries. A look at some of the activity areas:
JSPL
  • Coal rejects, fines and char are being used as fuel in captive power generation. For this, a fluidized bed combustion based power plant has been installed
  • Waste heat of sponge iron plant is being used in Waste Heat recovery boiler for power generation
  • Use of blast furnace waste gas as an alternative fuel in Reheating furnace, DRI and coal dryer.
  • 100% fly ash utilization in brick making, cement manufacturing and land filling etc.
  • Bio gas plants have been established for utilizing cow dung etc
  • SMS slag is reused for road making
  • Vermi compost plant has been established for utilization of domestic waste and biodegradable waste and converts them into compost.
  • Bio medical waste is scientifically collected and disposed off to the authorized parties.
  • SAF slag is reused for road making.
Resource Optimization: judicious use of valuable natural resources
We have taken several drives for resource conservation by taking appropriate Environmental Management Programs and by framing objectives to optimize the resource consumption.

Some of our achievements due to resource optimization efforts:
JSPL
  • Material consumption in various units has been optimized
  • 100% effluent treatment and recycling to conserve water
  • Water reservoirs established to harvest 27 lac m3 rain water and recharge ground water.
  • Flow meters in water consumption lines and specific water consumption is optimized for long products as 4.9 m3/T in respect to CREP guidelines, issued by Central Pollution Control Board i.e.5.0m3/T
  • Use of blast furnace waste gas, producer gas as alternative fuel to conserve furnace oil
  • Coal consumption in captive power plants is nil as all power plants are based on solid wastes from coal wshery.
  • Only fly ash bricks are used for all construction works to conserve top soil and utilize fly ash
