Diamond Exploration

In the portfolio of business activities,
JSPL has added a new dimension that of exploration and mining of high value
minerals and metals, like diamond, precious stones, gold, platinum group of
minerals, base metals, tar sands etc.
Initiation has been made in exploration for diamond, gold and associated
minerals under reconnaissance permit (RP) over 2500 sq.km in Jahspur
district of Chhattisgarh State. Another area of 3009 sq.km in the adjoining
parts of Jharkhand State has been allotted for exploration for diamond,
gold, base metals etc.
Jindal Rex Exploration Pvt. Ltd. has been incorporated under a joint
venture with Rex Diamond Mining Company with the headquarters in Canada and
the operational centre at Belguim.
The Project Diamond of the company not only plans for exploration and
mining of diamond in the states of Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand but also has
schemes for setting up cutting and polishing industries for diamond in these
states, if mineable deposits are found. Under this scheme, the tribal people
will be trained in the state of art in cutting and polishing of diamond,
leading to their placements in this industry as well as making them
independent in establishing cottage industry for cutting and polishing of
diamonds, as is in existence in Surat.

JSPL has established a field unit in
Jashpur Nagar, the headquarters of the tribal district of Jashpur in
Chhattisgarh. A field laboratory has been set up. Systematic stream sediment
sampling of first cycle has been completed within four months of the date of
commencement of the project in February 2005. Geological studies have been
carried out in that area, delineating the different litho types and also the
structural elements taking assistance of satellite imageries. The selected
batches of processed samples are being sent to South Africa and Western
Australia for getting mineral chemistry of kimberlite indicator minerals.
This will lead to identification of areas for search of kimberlitic rocks.
Low flying airborne magnetic survey by helicopter has been completed, in
order to locate anomaly points for possible presence of Kimberlite Clan
Rocks (KCR).

JSPL is also planning for expanding its
exploration gamut to the other countries. Certain proposals from the African
countries are under active consideration based on the data collected after
the first visit by JSPL team to the African countries. We will be soon
starting exploration for diamonds in Democratic Republic of Congo.
